A Walk In The Woods My grandmother contracted scarlet fever when she was a child. Her eyesight deteriorated as the disease burned away optic nerves and rendered her with permanent blindness. The result was a beautiful woman who saw everything from the inside out. No judgment of visual character, Gram was a great listener and possessed the innate ability to feel the difference in objects as subtle as a five dollar bill and a ten. Learning from her example, I practice seeing from the inside out and realize that I may never truly develop the ability to see as clearly as she could with her hands and ears. "A Walk in the Woods‚" is a tribute to my grandmother's determination to overcome obstacles. I remember the long rope she fingered from the front door to her mailbox to avoid getting lost along the way. I can't help but wonder if this ingenuity would have spared Hansel and Gretel from their breadcrumb disaster. "Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others." - Jonathon Swift (1667 - 1745) The original art measures 11.5”w x 16”h and I used pen, ink, color pencil & watercolor on an acid free Crescent illustration board.
